This welcome video came to be as a result of a major rewrite of Victor Tran’s desktop environment (DE) for Linux, called theDesk. It was designed as a modernization of his earlier “theShell” DE. To go along with this, we wanted the onboarding for the users to be friendly and welcoming, and to represent a fresh start. With this in mind, we took inspiration from Apple, who used to greet new macOS users with a short welcome video. The video transitions from theShell’s old desktop background, into a fully rigged waving animation from theDesk’s mascot, “Cactus Man”, finally ending with community backgrounds sitting where the setup prompts would be.
